Starting a blog can be life-changing.
Blogging has enriched my life in so many ways. It’s taken me places and taught me things I could not have imagined two and half years ago when I started. In that short time, so many positive things have happened to me because of blogging.
Perhaps you’re on the fence, considering starting a blog but wondering if you have the time and the patience to do it. Perhaps you’re already a blogger but feeling disillusioned or bored with blogging.
Here are my 8 reasons starting a blog is a good idea and is worth it.
Blogging is an awesome creative outlet
In this modern life, getting the chance to express yourself and do something you really love is a rare opportunity. By becoming caught up in work, family and other commitments it’s easy to lose our sense of selves and lose touch with the things we really enjoy. A blog can be an outlet for your creativity. You can blog about anything. Knitting, cooking, travel, reading, Lego, Zumba, eating out…whatever your passion, you can write about it. You can create your own space on the internet to dedicate to that one thing you really love to talk about. I started blogging initially because I was so bored and stifled doing a very humdrum job. I needed somewhere to go to unleash pent-up creativity, and I poured it in to a blog. Instantly, I became so much happier. We all need something that belongs only to ourselves. Creating a blog about something you love, and watching it grow, is also a lot of fun.
Blogging opens up a world of new opportunities
As your blog grows, you’ll start to get opportunities flowing in to your inbox. Invites to events, requests to review products, press trips, collaboration opportunities with other bloggers….all exciting things that would not happen unless you were a blogger. I’ve found myself at some beautiful events, taken some lovely trips to other towns, tried out some fantastic (and not-so-fantastic, but you never know until you try them) products, and worked with brands and bloggers on a host of different things. Bloggers are valued by brands and PR companies, and there is a place for everyone online, despite the occasional thing you might read about saturation. It takes honest and hard work, but it does happen.
Blogging grows your skill set
Blogging is, of course, about writing. You can’t be a blogger unless you can write a blog post. It’s not as easy as just typing words out on to the screen though. Writing is a skill which takes a lot of practice to get right. Blogging is not just about writing, though! Through blogging, I have learnt so much about photography, HTML, networking, marketing, social media, WordPress, and time management, amongst many other things. I’m still only at the tip of the iceberg as well. There is so much more I don’t know and haven’t learnt yet. Blogging is a journey and teaches you something new every day.
Blogging can make you money
I’ll quickly preface this point by saying money should not be your sole motivator for starting a blog! It takes time to start earning money. I had been blogging for almost a year when the first sponsored post invite landed in my inbox, and I was paid £50 for it. However, you can make decent money through blogging. There are lots of different ways you can do this. Sponsored posts, adverts, affiliate marketing and selling your own products are probably the most mainstream ways bloggers earn money. Blogging is a great secondary stream of income for many people (just remember you need to declare it to the tax man when you start earning). Here are 8 ways to make money blogging.
Blogging brings new friends in to your life
The blogging community is one reason many people like to blog. Bloggers are on the whole a friendly and welcoming group of people who love talking to and meeting other bloggers. Through blogging you can connect with other people online who have similar interests to yourself. You can also meet and chat with them at events. Many bloggers develop long-lasting and genuine friendships with other bloggers. I remember meeting other bloggers in person for the first time, and recall how nice it was to discuss our blogging experiences together. There’s always someone out there who can answer a question for you, or who has experienced something you have. Blogging brings people together. Which brings me to my next point…
Blogging helps you to help others
What can you do with your expertise on a particular subject, or new-found technical/marketing/photography skills? Teach others! Sharing your skills and knowledge is great for the blogging community and wider internet as a whole. There is always someone wanting to know the answer to something, and you might just have that answer for them. It could be a how-to post about gardening, DIY, crafting or any other hobby or activity, or a whole course you create teaching someone else how to do something. (And who knows, you might even earn some money from it…!).
Blogging enables you to write for others
A blog is an online portfolio of your work. You can easily share this with others and start writing for them. You can guest post on other blogs, write articles for magazines, work for specific brands as their blogger and write copy for a host of different companies. With the writing skills you perfect as a blogger, you can go out to the wider world and get new jobs. If you love writing and perhaps have ambitions of someday publishing your own book, blogging is a great daily exercise in honing your writing skills (and, again, unleashing your creativity).
Blogging holds limitless possibilities for your future
You never know where blogging will take you. Perhaps you will land a dream job because of your blogging skills, or your knowledge about a topic you’ve showcased on your blog (I’ve met people this has happened to). You might develop your own product and start selling it via your blog. You could start your own business as a full-time blogger, social media expert or web designer. Some people end up travelling full-time because they started a blog. Others become the next big thing on YouTube. Perhaps it will just be a way for you to supplement your income so you can do more of the things you enjoy.
The thing about blogging is that it is what you make it. You can get out of it what you put in, and you can turn it in to whatever you want it to be. Whether you’re looking for personal growth, new opportunities, friendships or extra income, blogging has it all.
