The majority of us use the internet in a relatively lighthearted manner. We’ll check in online to read the news. We’ll do a little online shopping. Even pin things that we like the look of or want to try out ourselves on Pinterest. We’ll post a picture of ourselves, our friends, our homes or things we’re doing on Instagram. We’ll share our thoughts in short snippets on Twitter, or go into a little more detail on a blog. All in all, the internet can be a pretty fun tool to be functional, express ourselves and communicate with others. But it’s important to remember that the internet is also an extremely powerful tool and powerful tools can often fall into the hands of people with bad intentions.
Used in a more negative manner, the internet can become a pretty dark and dangerous place. Heading into the wrong areas, it can be used to promote illegal activity or negative mindsets, it can be used to hack into individuals accounts and commit cases of identity fraud, theft, or image assassination. There are so many complex and potentially dangerous uses of the internet, that it can be hard to get your head around them! The infographic below will show you how the internet can even be used by the governments of different nations for political gain. What’s important is not to scare yourself, but rather, to familiarise yourself with potential threats. The more aware you are, the less likely you are to fall prey to cyber attacks yourself!
