Are you thinking about starting a blog? If so, great! I think starting blogging is one of the best things I ever did. It’s created so many opportunities for me and also makes me money. I always encourage anyone I meet to start one. But deciding what to blog about is one of the first hurdles to get past. There are so many blog ideas out there, just how do you decide what to blog about?
Finding your niche is one of the vital first steps before you can get your blog online, and it’s a good idea to get it right from the start. You might also be thinking of pinpointing your niche in an existing blog, so you can focus your post ideas on that. This post will help you to pick a niche out of the vast array of blog ideas out there.
Why You Should Pick A Blogging Niche
Your blog niche is the general topic you blog about. It should be a recognisable theme that your blog will become known for. People are drawn to something which resonates with them, and will read blogs which are related to their interests.
By sticking to a particular niche, you will keep your readers engaged and coming back for more. It will also help you concentrate your writing efforts.
What Blogging Niches Are There?
There are so many blogging topics out there, it’s impossible to list them all. You could start a blog about just about anything. Here are some of the most common blog ideas:
- Cooking and baking
- Interior design
- Lifestyle (a general mix of most of the above topics)
You could also write about something which is personal to you and which you have a particular expertise on. This could be a specific illness or condition, a career path, or a particular topic (Disney, for example).
The possibilities really are endless. You may hear people say that the blogging world is saturated, but I believe there is room for everyone on the infinite internet. If you want to write about beauty because it’s your passion, then do so.
How To Choose Your Niche
The first thing to ask yourself is, what do I really love talking about? You need to have a passion for your subject if you’re thinking of blogging long term. If not, you’ll give up fairly quickly when you become bored of the topic. Loving what you write about will carry you through quiet blogging periods, and busy times when you don’t have time to write. It will also ensure you have plenty of blog post ideas to come up with.
Another thing to check is, do you have good information you can share with a reader? People will visit your blog if it solves a problem for them. Think of what Google is used for: finding the answer to a question. Your blog could be the answer to that question. If you have good experience and knowledge of your topic, and want to share it, this is a good topic for you.
One final thing to ask yourself is if there is plenty of material available to write about. A book review blog will never run out of steam, neither will a style blog as there will always be something new to write about. If you can foresee plenty of material developing over time, then this is a very viable blog idea.
If you have passion for your topic, plenty of knowledge to share, and a good grasp of what readers are going to want to read about, then you will have found your perfect blogging niche.
