The world of blogging can seem pretty intimidating. You see all these professional bloggers out there making a living online, and you might wonder, “Can I do that too?” The answer is a resounding YES! Anyone with a passion and a little hard work can create a successful blog.
Now, before you dive headfirst into the blogosphere, let’s go over some amateur blogger tips and hints to help you get started on the right foot. As a professional blogger who has personally started, ended and continued working on many blogs over the past decade, I have some tips for anyone just getting going with blogging so you can avoid the mistakes I made.
Resist the urge to buy everything
One of the biggest mistakes I made with my own blog when first starting out was spending a lot of money on things I didn’t need. My top tip to any newbie blogger is to look for free options where possible, and not buy into every tool or course out there. A lot of information is available for free on the internet.
While there are many paid platforms and premium themes available, focus on creating great content first. Get a cheap hosting plan, a free blog theme, and don’t rush into buying any courses.
You can always invest in these later as your blog grows, when you will likely consider investing in tools and services that can help you streamline your workflow, improve your content creation, and analyze your website traffic.

Pick your niche
The best way to stand out is to focus on a specific topic that you’re genuinely interested in. This could be anything from baking delicious treats to collecting vintage postcards.
When you’re passionate about something, it shows in your writing, and your target audience will connect with your authenticity.
Getting your specific niche right is one of the most important things you can do from the start. This is true as EEAT becomes more important and bloggers are niching down to look more authoritative on their topic.
Choose the right platformThere are many free blogging platforms available, like Blogger or Wix. These are great options for beginners, but keep in mind that they have limitations in terms of customization and monetization.
Personally I have always used self-hosted WordPress. It’s my recommended platform. If you already use a free platform, consider upgrading to a self-hosted platform. As your blog grows, you might outgrow the limitations of free platforms. Self-hosted WordPress offers more flexibility, customization options, and control over your website.
Pick a catchy name
Your blog name is your first impression, so choose something memorable and relevant to your niche.
Before you purchase your domain, make sure the social media handles for the same name are available and grab them quickly (even if you don’t plan on posting on social media yet).
Invest in quality content
This is the most important thing. Focus on creating high-quality content that is informative, engaging, and original.
Embrace the power of storytelling; people connect with stories. Weave personal experiences and anecdotes into your writing to make your content relatable and engaging.
Conduct thorough research, fact-check your information, and present it in a clear, concise, and easy-to-understand way.
Write with a purpose. Every blog post should have a clear takeaway for your readers. Inform them, entertain them, or inspire them, but leave them with something valuable.
Don’t be afraid to experiment as you build your writing skills. Try different writing styles, formats, and lengths to see what resonates with your audience.

Do your keyword research
Understanding what people are searching for related to your niche will help you optimize your blog posts for search engines and reach a wider audience. I use Keysearch for my research as it’s a very affordable tool.
I recommend RankIQ as well which has keywords ready-picked for your niche.
Embrace the power of visuals
Images, infographics, and even videos can break up your text and make your blog posts more visually appealing.
If you can, take your own photos or make them using AI. There are also lots of free stock images available at sites like Pexels and Pixabay.
Monetization Strategies
Affiliate marketing: This is a great way for amateur bloggers to start earning an income. You promote other people’s products and services on your blog, and if someone makes a purchase through your affiliate link, you earn a commission.
At first, however, don’t overload your readers with affiliate links. Prioritize providing valuable content over excessive product promotion.
Once you have a decent amount of traffic to your blog, you can apply for Google Adsense to display ads on your site and earn revenue from clicks. There are lots of other ad providers too which require high traffic to join but have good payouts.
You might even start to consider your own online store once traffic builds.
Building Your Audience
Promote your blog posts on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to reach a wider audience and connect with potential readers. Share your work, learn from others, and build a supportive community.
I highly recommend getting started with Pinterest as this is a great source of traffic for many bloggers, including me.
Reach out to established bloggers or brands in your niche and explore collaboration opportunities. This can help you gain exposure and reach a wider audience.
If I have learnt anything this past year, it is to diversify traffic sources. Don’t rely on search engines or one particular platform as these are all subject to changes.

This is one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal. Build an email list so you can stay connected with your readers and send them updates on new content and promotions.
I’ll say it again: building an email list is one of the best things you can do to connect with your readers and build a loyal following.
One of the great things about an email list is that you have more control over your contact with people. In light of many recent changes with the Google search engine results plenty of bloggers lost their rankings and have turned to the power of an email list to continue to reach interested people.
Engage with your community
Respond to comments, participate in online forums related to your niche, and guest post on other blogs to build relationships and grow your audience.
Avoiding Amateur Blogging Mistakes
Giving up too easily: Building a successful blog takes time and consistent effort. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results overnight. You likely won’t. It can take weeks and months to see any sort of traction with a first blog.
It takes time to build trust with your audience and establish yourself as an authority in your niche. Be patient, keep creating great content, and the results will come.
Copying others: Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Your unique voice and perspective are what will set you apart. Pay attention to your readers’ feedback and respond to their comments and questions. This will help you build a loyal community around your blog.
Neglecting your SEO: While it might seem technical, understanding search engine optimization (SEO) basics will help your blog rank higher in search results and get discovered by more people.
Beware of amateur mistakes like sharing personal information or neglecting your privacy policy. Always protect your privacy and the privacy of your readers.
Don’t neglect website loading speed: A slow-loading website can frustrate visitors and hurt your search engine ranking. Choose a reliable hosting provider that prioritizes speed and performance.
Remember, amateur blogging is all about starting somewhere and learning as you go. Embrace the journey, experiment, have fun, and most importantly, enjoy the process of creating and sharing your unique voice with the world!
